English Language Courses
At the UCT English Language Centre, they use a learner-centred approach. It focuses on your individual needs and learning style, and gets you communicating confidently from the start. Whether you want to learn English for conversational or business use, or to complete the IELTS, TOEFL, FCE or CAE exams, there is an English course tailored to your needs.
All the courses also make use of Vula, UCT’s online collaboration and learning environment. Through your Vula class site, you can collaborate with other students on class projects, receive feedback, updates, and learning resources from your teacher, submit homework, access course outlines, ask questions and contribute your own content. Through the new UCT App you can now access Vula and other campus services from your mobile device 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

English for businessThis course is ideal for you if you mainly need to use English at work or in a business environment. It takes place in the afternoon and is combined with a 20 lesson morning General English course. The course will cover a range of business and work related topics, including speaking in meetings, giving presentations, negotiating, email and report writing, networking, making decisions and many more. As with all our courses, you and your classmates will be able to negotiate the content with your teacher so it fits your specific Business English needs

TEFL
English Language Teaching can be an enjoyable and rewarding career which attracts people for a variety of reasons. For many, it is an opportunity to see the world, living and working in places that others only dream of holidaying in. It may offer an opportunity to learn new language, immerse yourself in the customs and cultures of another country, or gain insight into a completely different society from your own. Some will teach abroad for a few years before moving into other careers, while others will continue to develop and grow in the industry and may become teacher trainers, course writers, managers or even open their own school. The UCT Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) course will provide you the skills and knowledge you need to succeed as an English Language Teacher. The four week course consists of 60 hours of input sessions and 60 hours of classroom observation and teaching practice. English for Academic Purposes Course
The English for Academic Purposes, EAP, = course open to all students who wish to improve their level of academic English Language. There are two components: (i) Reading and writing, and (ii) Speaking and Listening. Reading and Writing The reading and writing component trains students to produce and respond to complex written academic texts. Topics include

IELTS and TOEFL Exam Preparation
These courses are designed to prepare you for the IELTS and TOEFL academic English exams, with focused training in exam strategies and techniques to allow you to maximise your potential and achieve the grade you need. The IELTS and TOEFL exams are requirements for degree study at many English-speaking universities, including UCT. They are also used for immigration purposes and for professional accreditation. These courses run all year round and exams can be taken at regular intervals at a local test centre. Courses can be combined with General English afternoon electives. Please note that these courses are subject to availability, and you need to be at least Upper-Intermediate level to join the course |
UCT English Language Centre Student Accommodation
The UCT English Language Centre student accommodation offers students a wide range of options.
Student Residence
For independent living, you can choose to stay at one of our student residences, with other students from all over the world. The English Language Centre student residence is located 5 minutes’ walk for the school in the bustling heart of Cape Town. All rooms have a private en-suite bathroom, and many command stunning views of Table Mountain or Signal Hill. Shared kitchen and common room areas, such as the social room with pool table, TV and couches, are also provided. Rooms are available in large or standard size, and large rooms include a fridge and television. The residence has free WiFi, laundry service and fingerprint ID security system. The student residence also organizes weekly social programme activities which enable students to meet others and explore the city.
Homestay
Staying in a homestay – sharing a house with a local family, couple or single person – means you have the chance to practice the English you learn at school in a real life environment, and gain an insight into South African life at the same time. Living like a local, you will be fully immersed into family life and have ample opportunity to speak English.
Hotels and Guesthouses
If you would rather opt for one of the many hotels and guesthouses near the school, we can offer some guidance. There is a wide range of options available in the city and surrounding areas of all price brackets.
Service agreement
- Bookings, payment and registration
Bookings can be made via email or via the online booking system. Subject to availability, booking requests will be processed within three (3) working days. Customers who book via the online booking system customers will receive a unique booking confirmation code by email.
Customers will receive a provisional acceptance letter from ELC within seven (7) working days of receipt of unique booking confirmation code
Customer’s offer of a study place and accommodation place will only be formally confirmed upon payment of a deposit of 25% of the total value of the fees invoice. Full payment of the total value of the fees invoice must be made no less than fourteen (14) days before the course start date, unless by written arrangement with ELC.
Cancellation, deferral and course transfer
Cancellations made more than seven (7) days before the course start date will be charged a cancellation fee of twenty-five (25) percent of the total value of the fees invoice. Cancellations less than seven (7) days before the course start date will be charged a cancellation fee of fifty (50) percent of the total tuition fee. Once the course has started, there will be no refund of tuition fees or accommodation fees under any circumstances.
Customers may transfer to a different ELC course type subject to availability and the payment of a fee of six hundred and fifty South African rands (ZAR650). No refunds will be given for requested changes in the number of lesson per week.
Customers may defer their course to a later start date subject to availability. Deferrals made less than 14 days from the original course start date will be subject to payment of a fee of six hundred and fifty South African rands (ZAR650).
If a visa application is rejected by the South African Department of Home Affairs then all fees paid shall be refunded in full on presentation of formal written notice of an adverse decision from the Department of Home Affairs.
If ELC be unable to run the course type for which a customer has booked, and if a suitable alternative cannot be agreed, all tuition and accommodation fees shall be refunded in full.
Withdrawal.
There will be no refund of any fees paid in event of cancellation or withdrawal after arrival, or of no-show of a participant.
ELC reserves the right to mandate the withdrawal of a student due to non-attendance, disruptive or abusive behaviour, illegal activity or any other behaviour in breach of the UCT General Rules and Policies. There will be no refund of fees paid in event of mandated withdrawal.
Liability, indemnity and insurance
ELC and the University of Cape Town do not accept responsibility for damage or loss in respect of property of the applicant or in respect of property brought onto University premises by an applicant or registered student.
ELC and the University of Cape are indemnified in respect of any damage caused by an applicant or registered student to University property or to the property of third parties, whether on or off the University premises, as a result of the applicant’s or registered student’s actions either whilst on the University premises or whilst engaged in any activity related to the University.
Students are not insured by ELC or the University of Cape Town against illness, accident, theft or any loss of personal effects. ELC, the University of Cape Town or its representatives cannot accept responsibility for any accident occurring during the course, on or off the University premises, on excursions or during activities. Personal insurance cover is therefore recommended. Full personal insurance cover should be taken out to include medical and any other expenses and also loss of fees should the whole or part of a course or any activity, paid in advance, not be attended.
ELC students are not eligible for treatment by the University of Cape Town Health and Wellness service. Therefore, ELC students are required to take out medical insurance before travelling to South Africa. Evidence of medical insurance may be requested as a condition of registration.
. Undertaking
6.1 Student who are registered on ELC courses agree to be bound by the rules and regulations of the University of Cape Town for the period of their registration, including the ELC Student Handbook, the ELC Residence Handbook, and the rules and regulations of any University residence, club or society to which they may be admitted or become a member and by any requirements or conditions imposed by the University as a prerequisite to registration as a student of the University.
7. Accommodation
7.1 Students staying in ELC managed accommodation are required to sign a separate accommodation agreement.
7.2 When booking accommodation, the student accepts and agrees to the terms of the accommodation agreement. No refund shall be considered for any student who is asked to leave any accommodation belonging to or managed by ELC, for reasons related to a violation of the accommodation agreement.
Complaints procedure
8.1 In case of any problems or issues, no matter how serious or small, students are kindly requested to inform ELC staff about the problem at the earliest opportunity.
8.2 If a complaint cannot be resolved internally by ELC, students have the right to refer the matter to the UCT Office of the Ombud, who will take it forward in a confidential, impartial manner. For more information please visit the Ombud website.
Variation
The UCT English Language Centre may, in its sole discretion, change this agreement or any part thereof at any time without notice.
